A leading global professional services organization is seeking a Director of Tax to lead its domestic and international tax function. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this executive will oversee all aspects of tax compliance, planning, strategy, and risk management across U.S. and international operations.

The Director of Tax will serve as the organization’s senior tax leader, responsible for partnership taxation, international tax strategy, tax technology, tax governance, and team leadership. This individual will partner closely with executive leadership on strategic initiatives, business transactions, global expansion, and tax optimization opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Oversee U.S. federal, state, local, and international tax compliance activities.
  • Review and manage partnership tax returns, partner reporting, and Schedule K-1 processes.
  • Direct tax filings prepared internally and by external advisors.
  • Ensure compliance with income, sales/use, payroll, property, VAT, and other indirect tax requirements.
  • Manage business registrations, licenses, and filing obligations across multiple jurisdictions.

Partnership & Partner Tax Matters

  • Lead all partner tax reporting and compliance activities.
  • Oversee estimated tax payments, tax distributions, composite filings, withholding requirements, and pass-through entity tax elections.
  • Advise on partner admissions, promotions, retirements, withdrawals, transfers, and compensation-related tax matters.
  • Coordinate with partners and external tax advisors regarding complex tax issues.

International Tax Strategy

  • Develop and execute international tax planning strategies.
  • Provide guidance on transfer pricing, cross-border structuring, treaty utilization, and foreign entity taxation.
  • Manage tax implications related to global mobility programs, expatriate assignments, and international operations.
  • Support expansion into new international markets and jurisdictions.

Tax Planning & Advisory

  • Identify and implement tax planning opportunities to optimize the organization’s overall tax position.
  • Advise executive leadership on tax implications of strategic business decisions and transactions.
  • Provide tax guidance related to entity structuring, acquisitions, office expansions, real estate transactions, and organizational initiatives.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess potential business impacts.

Tax Risk Management & Governance

  • Lead tax audits, examinations, notices, and controversy matters.
  • Establish and maintain tax governance frameworks, policies, internal controls, and compliance procedures.
  • Manage tax reserves, documentation requirements, and risk assessment processes.
  • Oversee voluntary disclosure initiatives and remediation efforts when necessary.

Leadership & Operations

  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing tax team.
  • Establish organizational structure, staffing plans, and succession strategies.
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors and consultants.
  • Drive tax technology, automation, data management, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Partner with Finance, Accounting, Payroll, Benefits, and executive stakeholders to achieve organizational objectives.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA strongly preferred; JD or equivalent tax-focused credentials may be considered.
  • Advanced degree such as a Master’s in Taxation, JD, or LL.M. in Taxation preferred.

Experience

  • 12+ years of progressive tax experience with a combination of public accounting and corporate/in-house tax leadership.
  • Strong experience with partnership taxation and multistate tax matters.
  • International tax experience, including transfer pricing and cross-border planning.
  • Prior leadership experience managing and developing tax teams.

Technical Expertise

  • Deep knowledge of U.S. federal, state, local, and international tax law.
  • Significant experience with partnership taxation, partner reporting, and pass-through entity structures.
  • Strong tax research, planning, and compliance background.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with tax compliance, research, and financial systems.

Leadership Competencies
