Sr. Director, Property Tax
Company Overview
A large Fortune 500 renewable energy company is seeking an experienced Senior Director of Property Tax to lead all aspects of the organization’s property tax strategy, compliance, planning, and valuation activities across a complex portfolio of energy and infrastructure assets. This executive-level leader will play a critical role in minimizing tax liabilities, managing risk, and ensuring compliance while partnering closely with finance, accounting, legal, regulatory, and operational stakeholders.
Position Summary
The Senior Director, Property Tax will provide strategic leadership for property tax matters associated with a diverse portfolio of renewable generation, conventional power generation, transmission, distribution, and related infrastructure assets throughout North America. This role will oversee property tax planning, assessments, audits, compliance, appeals, and valuation initiatives while managing a team of tax professionals and external advisors.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute enterprise-wide property tax strategies to optimize tax positions and support business objectives.
- Lead all property tax compliance, assessment management, audit defense, and appeal activities across multiple jurisdictions.
- Oversee annual valuation analyses and assessment reviews for utility, power generation, renewable energy, transmission, distribution, and other infrastructure assets.
- Partner with business leaders, finance, accounting, regulatory affairs, legal, and operations teams on property tax implications of major investments, acquisitions, divestitures, and development projects.
- Evaluate legislative and regulatory developments affecting property taxation and recommend proactive strategies.
- Direct outside consultants, valuation specialists, attorneys, and service providers supporting property tax functions.
- Drive process improvements, technology enhancements, and best practices to strengthen operational efficiency and compliance.
- Prepare executive-level reporting and presentations regarding tax exposure, reserves, savings opportunities, and strategic initiatives.
- Manage and develop a high-performing property tax team through coaching, mentoring, and succession planning.
- Support financial reporting requirements related to property tax obligations and contingencies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or related field.
- CPA, CMI, JD, MBA, or advanced tax-related credentials preferred.
- 15+ years of progressive tax experience with significant focus on property tax.
- Extensive experience within the utility, energy, power generation, infrastructure, renewable energy, or related capital-intensive industries.
- Deep knowledge of property tax valuation methodologies, compliance requirements, assessments, audits, and appeals.
- Proven experience managing multi-state property tax functions and large asset portfolios.
- Strong leadership experience overseeing teams and external advisors.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior executives and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Exceptional analytical, negotiation, communication, and project management skills.
Preferred Experience
- Utility and regulated industry property tax expertise.
- Renewable energy asset valuation experience, including wind, solar, battery storage, or transmission infrastructure.
- Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, large-scale capital projects, and complex tax planning initiatives.
- Background interacting with taxing authorities, regulatory agencies, and external auditors.
