Analyst / Senior Analyst – Indirect Tax
Position Overview
A growing organization is seeking an Analyst or Senior Analyst, Indirect Tax to support the company’s indirect tax compliance and reporting functions. This role is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation, filing, and administration of sales and use tax, property tax, motor fuel tax, and other operational tax obligations.
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in tax, accounting, or finance, along with experience interpreting tax regulations, conducting research, and collaborating across multiple business functions. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to tax planning initiatives, process improvements, audit support, and strategic tax projects.
Key Responsibilities
Sales & Use Tax
- Prepare and file sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.
- Maintain and update taxability matrices related to products, services, purchases, and operational activities.
- Support the administration, configuration, and maintenance of tax software solutions.
- Research taxability questions and provide guidance to internal stakeholders.
- Assist with company-wide sales and use tax training initiatives.
- Review, validate, and maintain customer exemption certificates.
Property Tax
- Administer property tax compliance activities, including gathering documentation and preparing required reports.
- Prepare and submit property tax renditions and filings in accordance with jurisdictional requirements.
- Ensure property tax payments are made accurately and on time.
- Support annual property tax budgeting processes.
- Assist with property tax appeals and assessment reviews.
Motor Fuel Tax
- Prepare and submit motor fuel tax returns and supporting schedules.
- Reconcile motor fuel tax accounts and assist in resolving tax notices.
- Monitor tax rate changes and reporting requirements across applicable jurisdictions.
Tax Operations & Compliance
- Identify opportunities to reduce indirect tax exposure and improve tax efficiency.
- Support tax audits, examinations, appeals, and information requests from taxing authorities.
- Research tax regulations and legislative changes impacting business operations.
- Assist with the resolution of tax notices and compliance inquiries.
- Reconcile indirect tax accounts and prepare journal entries as needed.
- Maintain policies, procedures, and documentation related to indirect tax processes.
- Support SOX compliance efforts, including documentation and adherence to internal controls.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and special projects within the Tax Department.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
Experience
- 4+ years of experience in tax, accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Experience with indirect taxes, including sales/use, property, and/or fuel taxes, is preferred.
- Knowledge of accounting principles and tax reporting requirements.
- Ability to research and interpret tax laws and regulations.
- Experience supporting tax audits and compliance activities is a plus.
- ERP system experience preferred; experience with Oracle Financials is beneficial.
- Industry experience within asset-intensive or operationally complex environments is a plus.
