Key questions to ask when interviewing a potential in-house tax hire

Background and experience 

Most tax accountants begin their careers with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. This foundational education provides a comprehensive understanding of financial principles, tax regulations, and analytical skills necessary for navigating the complexities of the tax system. Key courses often include financial accounting, managerial accounting, taxation, auditing, and business law. Many programs also emphasize technology, including proficiency in accounting software like QuickBooks, Excel, and specialized tax preparation tools. 

The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is highly regarded and often preferred by employers. It signifies a high level of expertise and commitment to the profession. To become a CPA, candidates must pass the Uniform CPA Examination, which covers auditing and attestation, business environment and concepts, financial accounting and reporting, and regulation. Additionally, candidates must meet specific education and experience requirements, which vary by state. 

Proficiency in tax software is essential for efficiency and accuracy. Familiarity with tax preparation software such as OneSource, CorpTax, and Excel is crucial. With the growing reliance on technology, many tax accountants are also skilled in data analytics, which helps in managing large datasets and extracting insights.  Having experience in workflow automation using software such as Altyrix is in high demand across the industry.

Proficiency in tax software is essential for efficiency and accuracy. Ensure the candidate is familiar with the software your organization uses or is willing to learn it quickly. 

Q: Can you explain the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion? 

This question tests the candidate’s understanding of ethical boundaries in tax planning. Tax avoidance is legal and involves strategic planning, while tax evasion is illegal and involves deceit. 

Q: How do you stay informed about current tax laws and regulations, and how do you ensure compliance with tax obligations for your clients or organization?

This question assesses the candidate’s ability to develop comprehensive tax strategies that go beyond compliance. It evaluates their skills in accurate tax forecasting and their ability to provide strategic advice to minimize tax burdens legally.

Understanding the candidate’s career aspirations helps assess if they align with your organization’s growth and development opportunities.   

Q: How do you plan on continuing education?  

Continuous learning is essential in the ever-changing field of tax accounting. Look for candidates who are proactive about their professional growth.
