Tax Director – U.S. Income Tax Leadership
About the Opportunity
Join a global consumer and retail organization with a large multinational footprint, complex operations, and a highly sophisticated tax function. This leadership role provides the opportunity to oversee a significant portion of the U.S. income tax function while partnering with senior finance, legal, and business leaders to support strategic growth initiatives.
The Tax Director will lead tax compliance, tax provision, planning, audit, and advisory activities while managing a team of tax professionals. This role offers broad exposure to domestic and international tax matters within a dynamic, matrixed environment.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Oversee the preparation and filing of U.S. federal, state, and local income tax returns, including estimates and extensions
- Manage foreign-related tax filings and reporting requirements
- Monitor and assess changes in tax legislation and regulatory developments
- Lead technical analysis of complex federal and state income tax matters
- Direct federal and state tax audits, including strategy, documentation, and issue resolution
Tax Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Support quarterly and annual income tax provision processes under ASC 740
- Evaluate and document uncertain tax positions and related disclosures
- Maintain the integrity of tax reporting, including tax basis balance sheets and earnings & profits calculations
- Ensure strong internal controls and governance over tax reporting processes
Tax Planning & Strategy
- Identify and implement tax planning opportunities to improve tax efficiency and reduce risk
- Support development and execution of long-term tax strategies
- Analyze transfer pricing arrangements and related compliance requirements
- Provide strategic tax leadership aligned with business objectives
Business Advisory & Strategic Support
- Partner with finance, legal, and operational leaders on business initiatives and tax-sensitive transactions
- Support legal entity restructuring and organizational changes
- Provide tax guidance on strategic projects impacting domestic and international operations
Mergers, Acquisitions & Investments
- Support acquisitions, divestitures, and investment transactions
- Participate in tax due diligence and transaction structuring
- Evaluate tax implications and provide actionable recommendations to leadership
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of tax professionals
- Establish priorities and direct execution of key income tax activities
- Drive team capability building and succession planning
- Manage external advisors and service providers
- Ensure high-quality, timely delivery of all tax function responsibilities
Process Improvement & Technology
- Drive automation and continuous improvement initiatives
- Partner with finance and IT teams to enhance tax technologies and ERP integrations
- Improve scalability, efficiency, and data quality across the tax function
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field
- 8+ years of progressive corporate income tax experience
- Strong experience in tax compliance, ASC 740 tax accounting, planning, and audit management
- Deep knowledge of U.S. federal and multi-state income taxation
- Experience operating within large, multinational or matrixed organizations
- Proven leadership and people management experience
- Strong communication, analytical, and stakeholder management skills
Preferred
- CPA, JD, or Master’s in Taxation
- Big 4 and/or large multinational corporate tax experience
- Experience with transfer pricing, legal entity restructuring, and M&A transactions
- Familiarity with tax technologies such as OneSource, Corptax, and major ERP platforms (SAP or similar)
- Experience leading tax transformation, automation, or process improvement initiatives
