Tax Director
Our client is seeking an experienced Director of Tax to lead North American tax operations and serve as a strategic business partner across the organization. This high-impact leadership role will oversee U.S. federal, state, local, franchise, and indirect tax matters, while providing guidance on tax compliance, financial reporting, audit management, tax planning, and international tax matters.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong blend of technical expertise, leadership experience, and business acumen, with the ability to collaborate across Finance, Treasury, Legal, FP&A, and executive leadership teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight of North American tax operations, including U.S. federal, state, local, franchise, and indirect taxes, as well as Canadian tax matters
- Serve as a trusted advisor to Finance and business leadership on tax risks, tax planning opportunities, cash tax management, and effective tax rate considerations
- Develop and strengthen the North American tax function, focusing on technical excellence, process improvement, and scalable execution
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance tax processes, controls, and reporting efficiencies
- Oversee all income and franchise tax matters for the U.S. consolidated group
- Ensure timely, accurate, and well-controlled tax compliance and reporting processes
- Lead income tax provision activities, forecasting, and cash tax planning
- Coordinate with third-party tax providers and external auditors to support reporting and compliance requirements
- Maintain compliance with corporate governance standards and internal controls
- Lead state and local tax reporting and compliance activities
- Manage state income, franchise, and indirect tax matters
- Monitor legislative developments and assess the impact on the organization
- Identify opportunities to improve compliance processes and minimize tax risk
- Lead audit readiness and defense efforts for federal, state, and indirect tax examinations
- Manage issue identification, documentation, substantiation, and resolution
- Partner with internal stakeholders and external advisors to reduce tax risk and maintain compliance
- Partner closely with Global Tax, Corporate Finance, Treasury, Legal, and FP&A teams
- Support corporate restructuring, legal entity optimization, financing transactions, and business transformation initiatives
- Assist business development teams with tax due diligence related to mergers and acquisitions
- Integrate tax considerations into key operational and strategic business decisions
- Provide technical support and guidance on U.S. international tax matters
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field
- Additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
- 10+ years of progressive experience in Public Accounting and/or Corporate Tax
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing tax teams and developing talent
- Strong knowledge of federal and state income tax compliance and reporting
- Experience managing external tax advisors and auditors
- Advanced Excel skills, including Power Query and Pivot Tables
- Ability to work cross-functionally and influence stakeholders across multiple business functions
- Willingness to travel up to 30% as needed
Preferred
- Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, JD, or LL.M. in Taxation
- CPA certification
- Strong State & Local Tax (SALT) experience
- U.S. International Tax and Transfer Pricing experience
- OneSource Tax Provision, OneSource Income Tax, SAP, Alteryx, Microsoft Power Query
