Treasury career paths: from analyst to CFO

The treasury profession offers a dynamic and rewarding career path, with clear progression from entry-level roles to senior leadership positions, occasionally including the coveted Chief Financial Officer (CFO) role.

Across Europe, treasury professionals are increasingly recognised for their strategic contributions to financial planning, risk management and corporate finance. As businesses face growing complexity in financial markets, the treasury function has become central to decision-making and long-term value creation.

Whether you are just starting out or aiming for a senior role, understanding the treasury career path can help you plan your development, build relevant skill sets and position yourself for future success.

Starting out: Treasury Analyst and Assistant Roles

Most treasury careers begin with entry-level positions such as Treasury Analyst, Cash Management Assistant or Financial Analyst. These roles focus on operational tasks within the treasury department, including short-term cash flow forecasting, bank reconciliations, payment processing and financial data analysis.

Key skills and qualifications at this stage include:

  • Strong Excel and financial modelling capabilities
  • A bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting or a related field
  • Understanding of cash management systems and banking platforms
  • Basic knowledge of foreign exchange, interest rates and liquidity management

Internships and early exposure to corporate treasury functions can be valuable for building experience. Many treasury analysts in Europe work within multinational corporations, financial institutions or shared service centres, where multilingual skills and regional compliance knowledge are highly valued.

Progressing to Treasury Manager and Senior Analyst

After gaining a few years of experience, professionals typically move into roles such as Treasury Manager, Senior Treasury Analyst or Cash Flow Manager. These positions involve greater responsibility, including managing liquidity, overseeing bank relationships and contributing to strategic forecasting and financial planning.

At this level, professionals begin to specialise in areas such as:

  • Risk management and hedging strategies
  • Capital markets and funding initiatives
  • Treasury systems implementation and automation
  • Compliance with European financial regulations

Treasury managers often collaborate with FP&A, tax and accounting teams, and may begin to lead projects or small teams. Developing management skills, communication skills and a broader understanding of financial analysis and financial reporting is essential for progression.

Stepping into strategic roles: Head of Treasury and Director level

The next step in the treasury career path is typically head of treasury, group treasurer or treasury director. These senior roles are highly strategic and involve overseeing the entire treasury function, including global liquidity, funding strategies, financial risk management and treasury policy development.

In Europe, treasury leaders must navigate complex regulatory environments, including EMIR, Basel III and country-specific reporting requirements. They also play a key role in managing relationships with banks, investors and internal stakeholders.

Responsibilities at this level include:

  • Designing and executing funding and portfolio management strategies
  • Leading treasury transformation initiatives
  • Advising on mergers, acquisitions and divestitures
  • Enhancing financial statements and reporting accuracy
  • Aligning treasury operations with broader finance functions

Professionals in these roles are expected to have strong decision-making abilities, commercial acumen and the ability to influence senior stakeholders across the business.

The path to CFO: treasury as a stepping stone

For many treasury professionals, the ultimate goal is to become a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). While not all CFOs come from a treasury background, the treasury role provides a strong foundation in financial management, strategic planning and stakeholder engagement.

To prepare for the CFO job, treasury leaders should focus on:

  • Gaining experience across broader finance roles, including FP&A, tax and investor relations
  • Building a strong understanding of business operations and financial statements
  • Developing board-level communication skills and leadership capabilities
  • Understanding corporate governance and financial reporting standards

In Europe, CFOs are increasingly expected to lead transformation initiatives, drive ESG strategy and navigate geopolitical risks. Treasury professionals with international experience and a deep understanding of financial markets are well-positioned to take on the CFO role.

Skills and qualifications for treasury progression

To advance in treasury, professionals should invest in continuous learning and development. Key qualifications and certifications include:

  • ACT (Association of Corporate Treasurers) qualifications
  • CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) certification
  • Master’s degrees in business administration, finance or economics

In addition to technical skills, soft skills such as leadership, adaptability and cross-cultural communication are increasingly valued, especially in pan-European treasury roles.

The European treasury market is evolving rapidly, with several trends shaping career paths:

  • Digital transformation: Treasury departments are adopting automation, AI and data analytics to improve efficiency and strategic decision-making. Experience with treasury management systems (TMS) and ERP platforms is in high demand
  • ESG and sustainability: Treasury is playing a growing role in sustainable finance, green bonds and ESG-linked funding. Understanding these areas can open new career opportunities
  • Global mobility: Many European companies are hiring treasury talent across borders. Experience in international treasury operations and multi-currency environments is highly valued
  • Hybrid working: Flexible working arrangements are becoming standard, allowing treasury professionals to manage global responsibilities remotely
