This position is responsible for the oversight and management of the company’s tax and treasury function. Reporting directly to the Vice President, the position will lead the tax function of the company including tax reporting and compliance, in addition will be overall responsible for the global cash management function. The position will collaborate with cross-functional teams as well as with external tax, banking and other service providers. This individual will have two direct reports and lead a broader team split between tax and treasury.

Essential Functions:

Tax

  • Responsible for tax compliance in both Canada and the U.S.
  • Performs tax planning, reporting and analysis globally.
  • Supports the financial reporting process by preparing quarterly and annual tax provisions and disclosures.
  • Liaises with the company’s external tax consultants on various tax matters.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, provincial and other local tax regulations.
  • Manages and responds to tax audits and disputes with tax authorities.
  • Manages the filing of monthly, quarterly, and annual indirect tax returns for entities in Canada and the U.S.
  • Advises on tax implications of cross-border transactions and assist in the development and execution of the company’s transfer pricing policy.
  • Provides M&A and transaction support by evaluating tax implications and providing strategic guidance related to the deal teams.
  • Assess and implement technology and tools to support a more efficient and effective tax and reporting cycle.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in tax regulations which may impact the business and provide recommendations to mitigate potential risks.
  • Supports of payroll tax processes both in Canada and the U.S.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to provide tax advice on business transactions, contracts and strategic initiatives.

Treasury

  • Develops and implements cash management strategies to optimize global liquidity and working capital.
  • Develops and improves cash flow forecasting models to ensure sufficient liquidity for ongoing operations.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to ensure sufficient funds in accounts for planned outflows.
  • Supports the financial reporting process with financial analysis and treasury related insight.
  • Supports intercompany cash management strategies and the flow of funds throughout the organization.
  • Manages bank accounts including opening/closing accounts, access and approval rights, and correspondence with bank partners.
  • Maintains the overall capital structure, ensuring compliance with lender deliverables and reporting requirements.
  • Assists in optimizing capital structure through various financing initiatives.
  • Develops and implements risk management strategies focused on currency and interest rates.
  • Maintains an efficient system of policies and procedures that impose an adequate level of control over treasury and tax activities and provide support for regulatory reporting.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. tax regulations.
  • Cash management experience.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in managing financial and tax reporting processes in an international context (Canada and U.S.)

Required Education, Experience, Certifications and Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPA is preferred.
  • Tax and/or treasury leaders who brings a minimum of 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in Canadian and/or US tax reporting and compliance.
  • Ability to travel between the U.S. and Canada.

  • Must be able to work independently, prioritizing and meeting multiple deadlines.

  • An effective decision maker who can create and manage a plan and execute that plan.
