The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial operations of the fund. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will ensure the accuracy of financial statements and other critical fund reporting. The ideal candidate will have experience in the real estate credit industry, as well as expertise in managing and coordinating accounting processes and closes with an external fund administrator. Additionally, experience in preparing SEC reporting, 10Ks, and Qs is required.

Responsibilities include:

General/Operational:

  • Serve as a key advisor and partner to the CFO in the execution of all accounting and reporting activities
  • Leads the monthly and quarterly close processes, coordinating all external service providers
  • Responsible for the preparation of timely and accurate financial statements in compliance with GAAP and SEC requirements
  • Prepare and present quarterly results of operations to CFO and leadership
  • Engage and manage third party fund administrator to perform accounting and monthly NAV calculations for multiple share classes
  • In cooperation with the Broker-Dealer organization, provide oversight of third-party transfer agent activity to ensure monthly dividend distributions are timely and accurate
  • Assist CFO in management of key service provider relationships including negotiation and review of agreements for accounting, audit and tax services
  • Support finance and accounting aspects of acquisitions and dispositions, including structuring, due diligence support and credit compliance
  • Responsible for lender reporting including calculation of and compliance with credit covenants
  • Consult with subject matter experts as required on key accounting areas including technical matters, taxation, compliance and capital markets

Accounting, Internal Audit & Tax:

  • Responsible for the preparation of timely and accurate financial statements and filings (e.g., 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K and other filings) in compliance with GAAP and SEC requirements
  • Oversight of the annual audit process and quarterly reviews and ensure timely completion of all auditor-related procedures; also ensure completion of annual property level audits to meet lender, governmental or JV requirements.
  • Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
  • Manage Big-4 firm to satisfy Sarbanes-Oxley based internal audit requirements.
  • Responsible for directing credit’s tax advisors regarding quarterly compliance and overseeing the timely filing/compliance for all local and federal returns including taxable subsidiaries

Reporting/Other:

  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of business and financial results
  • Prepare and present financial results to credit leadership team
  • Assist in the preparation of Board and Audit committee meeting materials

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA certification is preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial operations, preferably within the real estate credit industry
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and SEC reporting requirements
  • Experience managing and coordinating accounting processes and closes with an external fund administrator is highly desirable
  • Proficiency in financial software systems. Experience in Yardi and Active Disclosure is a plus
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and make sound recommendations
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy and data integrity
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to coordinate and collaborate across all company functions
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively
