Tax Manager
Overview
A rapidly evolving multinational business is seeking an experienced US Tax Manager to lead its federal, state, and local tax compliance, tax reporting, and governance activities across its U.S. operations. This position is ideal for a hands-on tax professional who thrives in a dynamic, multi-jurisdiction environment and enjoys building scalable processes within a growing organization.
The role plays a critical part in ensuring the company meets all U.S. tax obligations, maintains strong audit-ready controls, and supports key financial reporting requirements. This is a highly visible position working closely with Finance, Legal, HR, and senior leadership to strengthen tax governance while enabling compliant and efficient growth.
This role is remote within the United States.
Key Responsibilities
U.S. Income Tax Compliance & Reporting
· Oversee preparation, review, and timely filing of U.S. federal, state, and local income tax returns, estimates, extensions, and supporting workpapers (returns prepared in partnership with external advisors).
· Manage quarterly and annual estimated federal and state income tax payments.
· Coordinate all PBC documentation and deliverables to external advisors.
· Perform return-to-provision reconciliations and maintain audit-ready support files.
· Lead federal and state income tax audits, including IDR responses and strategy coordination.
Tax Provision & Financial Reporting
· Support annual and quarterly tax provision processes (ASC 740 or IFRS), including current and deferred tax calculations.
· Strengthen the in-house provision process and ensure accuracy of tax disclosures for audited financial statements.
· Maintain strong documentation standards, internal controls, and reconciliations for both provision and compliance.
Indirect Tax (Sales & Use, Property, Excise)
· Manage preparation, filing, and remittance of U.S. sales & use, property, and excise tax returns.
· Monitor business activity to identify nexus changes and new filing requirements.
· Maintain exemption certificates for purchases and customer sales.
· Support taxability reviews and indirect tax advisory needs as they arise.
Registrations, Licensing & Jurisdiction Management
· Manage and renew all U.S. tax registrations.
· Register the business in new states/localities as required.
· Coordinate city/county business licenses and municipal filings.
· Prepare and file Annual Reports for applicable jurisdictions.
Governance, Controls & Advisor Management
· Maintain the full U.S. tax compliance calendar across all jurisdictions.
· Enhance internal tax controls, process documentation, and risk mitigation frameworks.
· Oversee external tax advisors, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
· Manage all federal and state tax notices and regulatory correspondence.
· Oversee annual 1099 processes.
Tax Advisory & Business Partnering
· Provide tax input on business initiatives, commercial decisions, and cross-functional projects.
· Support U.S. tax optimization initiatives (including work related to acquisitions or specific business units).
· Partner with Finance, Legal, HR, and business teams to ensure tax implications are understood and managed.
· Identify and implement opportunities to streamline and scale tax processes.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Essential
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (Master’s in Taxation a plus).
· 5-10 years of progressive U.S. tax experience across income and indirect taxes.
· Strong understanding of U.S. federal and multi-state income tax compliance.
· Experience with ASC 740 or IFRS tax provision processes.
· Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines, calendars, and complex workflows.
· Strong analytical and documentation skills with attention to detail.
· Excellent communicator with experience working cross-functionally and with external advisors.
Desirable
· Multi-state sales & use tax expertise, including nexus analysis.
· Experience with Canada or Puerto Rico tax compliance.
· Technical knowledge of deferred taxes, FIN 48, and valuation allowances.
· Exposure to international provisions such as GILTI or FDII.
