Tax Controversy Manager
Position Overview
The Manager – IRS Practice, Procedure & Controversy position is a dynamic position that provides critical support to the Tax Controversy group. The position encompasses managing company’s U.S. income tax audits, including support for contested tax matters that are in IRS Appeals or litigation. This role is responsible for interpreting federal income tax laws, responding to IRS requests, and assisting in the successful resolution of tax controversy related matters.
Job Responsibilities
- Manage tax audit defense for the U.S. consolidated group, which includes developing consistent and strategic responses to inquiries in a timely and concise manner, reviewing and analyzing government positions to provide strategic defense options to leadership, and developing and proposing strategies to reach resolution with the tax authorities.
- Consult internal and external subject matter experts (tax professionals in federal domestic tax, international tax, transfer pricing, and tax operations as well as operations personnel and outside resources such as economists, public accountants, and other tax specialists) in order to provide complete, accurate responses to the IRS in a way that mitigates tax controversy.
- Research and interpret federal income tax laws; work with the Director – IRS Practice, Procedure & Controversy and Tax Counsel, where appropriate, to evaluate and defend various complex tax issues including international and transfer pricing matters as they arise during the audit process.
- Evaluate developments in IRS practice and procedures for application to company. Stay abreast of changing IRS processes, translating those changes to the parameters in which the organization works.
- Lead, manage and train the tax controversy team located in U.S.
- Collaborate with Planning and Operations teams to effectively manage U.S. audit risks, identifying areas for continued improvement, and incorporate lessons learned.
Qualifications
Required (Basic) Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Tax, JD and/or LL.M.
- Minimum of 5 years of federal tax experience, including federal controversy experience, in public accounting, law firm, and/or corporate tax department
- Minimum of 4 years of experience reviewing the work, and assisting in the training, of junior employees.
- Relocation is not included with this position; only candidates within the 50-mile radius of Houston, TX will be considered
- Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future
