Overview

I’m partnering with a well‑established international manufacturer recognized for its strong market presence and long-standing reputation for quality and operational excellence. The organization continues to expand across North America and is now seeking an experienced Indirect Tax Specialist to strengthen its U.S. sales and use tax compliance function.

This role offers broad scope across multi‑state compliance, systems/process optimization, audit support, and cross‑border exposure. It is ideal for someone who thrives in a detail‑oriented environment and enjoys collaborating with Finance and IT to improve tax efficiency and control.


Key Responsibilities

Sales & Use Tax Compliance

  • Lead the preparation, filing, and payment of U.S. state and local sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Reconcile sales/use tax accounts and ensure timely remittance.
  • Manage exemption certificate compliance and oversee supplier exemption issuance.

Risk Management & Audits

  • Respond to state and local tax notices.
  • Coordinate all aspects of indirect tax audits.
  • Monitor nexus thresholds and ensure registrations keep pace with business expansion.

Processes, Systems & Controls

  • Maintain and enhance ERP tax configuration for U.S. sales and use tax.
  • Collaborate with Finance and IT to identify automation opportunities and strengthen process controls.
  • Support documentation requirements for internal controls related to indirect tax activities.

Research, Cross‑Border & Additional Support

  • Research developing indirect tax requirements, including environmental levies, gross receipts taxes, and other emerging obligations.
  • Assist with Canadian GST/HST, excise, and property tax matters when needed.
  • Contribute to broader compliance initiatives across the Finance/Tax function.

Candidate Profile

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 3+ years of U.S. sales and use tax compliance experience, ideally across multiple states.
  • Strong analytical skills, accuracy, and the ability to handle competing deadlines.

Preferred

  • CPA or progress toward CPA.
  • Experience within manufacturing or industrial environments.
  • Familiarity with ERP tax functionality (e.g., JDE, SAP) and indirect tax software such as Avalara.
  • Exposure to Canadian indirect tax rules.
