My client is a privately owned and operated commercial real estate company specializing in the acquisition, long-term ownership and management of shopping centers, office buildings, apartments and storage facilities throughout the United States. The Assistant Controller ensures financial compliance across multiple entities and properties. This role supports year-end close and delivers accurate financial reporting to leadership, regulatory bodies, lenders, and investors.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead compliance efforts across entities, including loan reporting, reserve management, and adherence to fee arrangements
  • Maintain internal financial controls and oversee company debt obligations
  • Perform treasury functions and manage commercial draw processes for new developments
  • Support and manage financial systems such as Yardi and Microsoft Office (Access & Visual Basic)
  • Assist in preparing annual budgets, including escrows, mortgages, insurance, and reimbursement schedules
  • Contribute to investor reporting and ensure accuracy of financial work papers
  • Maintain expertise in partnership taxation relevant to real estate
  • Collaborate with external partners on property tax appeals and tax return preparation
  • Provide financial data for property-level financing and investment sales
  • Generate ad-hoc reports for executive leadership as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Accounting (CPA or MBA preferred)
  • 5+ years of real estate accounting experience (client focus in public accounting and/or industry)
  • Public accounting and partnership tax experience preferred
  • Proficient in Excel and Yardi (preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail, communication, and leadership skills
