Newly Qualified CTA
As a newly qualified CTA, you will have an exceptionally broad range of career options available to you. Options include working in practice for an accountancy or law firm, moving in-house to a plc or a bank or planning a period of time working overseas. You are more in demand now than perhaps at any other stage of your career.
Having such a wide range of opportunities can throw up more questions than answers, such as:
Do I need to move?
Make sure that you are aware of what your present firm can offer – it is worth sitting down with them to discuss your options.
Considerations on whether or not to move are quite different at CTA from those at ATT level. And your options are considerably wider. Questions you should be asking yourself include:
- Do I want to develop my career to partner level
- Do I want to work overseas at some stage
- Do I want to move in-house
- Do I want to work outside London
What types of role are on the market and available to me at the moment?
Now is a fantastic time for newly qualified CTAs to be coming on to the market. Many accountancy practices and commercial organisations are on the lookout.
- Accountancy firms of all sizes are eager to recruit NQs and can offer routes to greater specialisation, a move to a different type of tax discipline altogether, and more consultancy-based roles
- Large FTSE organisations, as well as some exceptional niche roles in other organisations, for those who want to use their tax skills to do something a little bit different
- Law firms are becoming a new route for accountancy-trained CTAs to gain more consulting and varied tax experience, including UK and international tax structuring, transaction tax, share schemes, private client and trusts.
What should my considerations be when deciding on a new role?

It is very important to ensure that you will be:
- Doing quality work that complements your experience and further develops the skills you have already gained
- Able to progress and constantly advance your skills, to enhance your ability to move in the future
