Newly Qualified ATT
Throughout your training you were told that the world would be your oyster once you had those coveted letters after your name, and that a wealth of opportunities would lie before you. This is much more the case now than in recent years and such a range of opportunities can raise more questions than answers, such as:
Do I need to move?
Before rushing out on to the market, make sure you are aware of what your present firm can offer - it is often worth sitting down with them to discuss options.
For a number of people, when they have passed the ATT, staying with their current firm and going on to get the CTA is a natural progression. However, sometimes it makes sense to move if, for example:
- There is a lack of progression
- Your firm is not supportive towards you completing your CTA
- Your firm cannot offer the variety or technical complexity to help with passing your CTA
- The CTA is not a relevant qualification (such as in expatriate tax)
However, do not just stay at your firm because it is simpler to do so or because you can’t be bothered to look outside.
What types of role are on the market and available to me at the moment?
Now is a fantastic time for ATT-qualified tax professionals to be coming on to the market. Many accountancy practices are very interested in hiring.
The majority of opportunities are within private practice and it makes sense to stay within practice and go on to get your CTA. Accountancy firms of all sizes are eager to recruit ATTs and can offer routes to greater specialisation, a move to a different type of tax discipline altogether, and to more consultancy-based roles.
What should my considerations be when deciding on a new role?
There are some crucial criteria to consider whenever you make a career move and it is very important to look beyond the financial package.
It is very important to ensure that you will be:
- Doing quality work that complements your experience and further develops the skills you have already gained
- Able to progress and constantly advance your skills, to enhance your ability to move in the future.
Making sure that the role is a good match for you is more important than the initial offer package, and will have a far greater impact on your medium to long-term earnings.
